As genome sequencing becomes more accessible this could revolutionize health care! It could also shatter the insurance model of paying for health care. Ignoring the fact that much health “insurance” today is little more than pre-paid health care, what would happen if suddenly you and the insurance company knew you had a high chance of getting one disease and little chance of any others. You would want to insure against that disease but wouldn’t be able to. You would be better able to save up for treatment, but in all likelihood you will need the help and support of your community. While it’s unfortunate insurance may not be able to solve your problem, a return to dependency on one’s community could see the return of mutual aid societies and a boom in the community spirit in Western nations. It could be a return to Tocqueville’s America.
