Description:
An oculoplethysmography is intended to detect narrowing or blockage of the carotid arteries that run on both sides of the neck. This narrowing can interrupt blood supply to the brain and subsequent strokes can occur. In the procedure, eyecups are attached to the corneas, and probes attached to earlobes, and pulse rates in the eye and earlobe are compared. Normally, the pulse should occur simultaneously in these two locations. If a delay exists between pulses, a carotid artery may be narrowed or blocked. The next step if a narrowing or blockage is detected in a oculoplethysmography is to schedule an angiography.
