The patient lies on a table that moves into the bore of a machine that uses both a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create images of the internal structure of the body that a radiologist interprets and makes diagnoses with.   An MRI shows internal structures, such as the brain within the skull or the cartilage within the knee joint.
