Similar to other pain management injections, a lumbar sympathetic block is referred to a s a "block" because it stops the signal of pain from going to the brain. A lumbar sympathetic block is typically an anesthetic injected to deliver directly to the nerves in the low back to stop the signal of pain coming from other nerves, such as in the legs. There are other nerve functions controlled in the lumbar areas, so lumbar sympathetic blocks have also been used to treat pain and increase mobility in patients with RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy), shingles (Herpes Zoster), or other peripheral vascular diseases.
