Egg Donation (Fertility and Sexual Health)
Body Area: Female Specific
Body Parts: Reproductive System
Egg donation programs connect women in need of a donated egg with women willing to donate them. A woman may be in need of an egg due to premature ovarian failure, genetic reasons, or due to previously unsuccessful fertility treatments. The woman donating her eggs is given a fertility drug to stimulate her ovaries into developing several mature follicles, each of which may contain an egg. The donor is monitored by ultrasound and blood tests to ensure that the ovarian stimulation is both safe and effective. An ultrasound guided needle is used to collect the eggs while the donor is under local anesthetic.
