Bone Densitometry (Internal Medicine)

Body Area: Arms / Hands
Body Parts: Forearm
Symptoms: Pain
Description:
A bone density scan (DXA) is a very noninvasive experience. This scan may be performed for a number of reasons that place people in a risk category for osteoporosis. The machine sends low dose x-rays that have two different energy peaks, one that is absorbed by soft tissue and the other through bone. The computer interprets the information and compiles an individual report for each scan. Both the radiologist and physician will review the information before it is passed on to the referring doctor.
