An apple a day may be as beneficial as daily statin use. Apples and pears reduce the risk of stroke by more than 50%. A new study has found that the bioactive compounds in apples not absorbed during digestion boost the growth of good gut bacteria. These bioactive compounds vary by apple variety. After analyzing seven types of apples, Granny Smiths appeared to have the most beneficial effect. The gut bacteria of obese people is out of balance, and this imbalance causes chronic inflammation that leads to diabetes. Re-establishing the balance of gut bacteria may reduce inflammation and fight against obesity.
