Vancouver hospitals fear drug shortage, cancel elective heart surgeries

In a single-payer system, everything is rationed.  If your procedure is elective, you will have to wait while more critical patients get care. I’m trying to understand “elective heart surgery”. I understand elective cosmetic surgery, but it seems that if you want to live, you probably “need” elective heart surgery.

Vancouver General and St. Paul’s hospitals postponed nine scheduled cardiac surgeries Tuesday over fears they could run out of a critical medication and not have enough for emergency cases.
